Matala is located in the southern part of Heraklion, Crete, just 65km from the city center where with a vehicle of our company KretaCars you have the opportunity to go comfortably and safely to this favorite destination. Matala is identified with the hippies and the well-known archeological caves, where they were created thousands of years ago on the cliffs that stand on the north side of the bay and the beach, and now there is an archeological place. History states that these caves were created either for Romans. tombs, or even Christian - of the early Christian period or for residences in even older years that hosted the "children of flowers". In the caves of Matala, hippies found their paradise in the 60s and 70s, when hundreds gathered to express themselves freely, to rejoice in love and to create. A trademark of the hippies was the two fingers of victory, accompanied by the phrase "Peace Man". Today, as it is widely known, the festival of Matala is organized by the Matala Tourism Development Association, it is the revival of an era that remained indelible in the history of Crete, the era of the "Children of Flowers" and their union from all over the world. It was the first form of liberation of morals, in modern history, a way of liberation from the oppression of institutions. Matala has a large beach about 300 meters, which consists of sand, fine gravel and crystal clear and deep blue waters. The seabed is flat in the center of the beach and the waves, when the west wind blows, are very large and impressive. In fact, on the north side there is a large cave, where some daredevils dive from there. In general, the beach of Matala is well organized with the appropriate facilities for visitors who want to enjoy the beauty of the place. It is important that there are various taverns, cafes and bars to serve every visitor. Next to Matala you will find the beautiful Kokkini Ammos and the exotic beach Kommos.
